Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 modem
Are you kidding? Is it a joke? This is the first reaction when I told to friend of mine that I’m using Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 as a modem for internet connection to my laptop. Perhaps you will react like he did if I told you that there is possibility to use your Xperia X8 or Xperia W8 as a modem for your laptop or PC. Here is the guide how to convert your Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 into internet modem. To use your phone as a modem, you need USB cable and a free Android app. It’s so great that you can find it at any list of Best Android apps for Xperia X8.
1. Download PdaNet from the Android Market in your PC.
PdaNet is a free Tethering application that instantly shares the Internet access of your Xperia X8 with your computer. PdaNet does NOT require root access or hacking your phone’s firmware.
Hint: if you have no internet connection in your desktop PC, use your Xperia X8 to download the app to the SD card, connect the phone to the PC, search for the apk file in the downloads folder and copy the file to your computer.
2. Simply run the installer, follow the instructions and agree to install the drivers you’re prompted about on your Windows system.
3. You will also be prompted to connect your Xperia X8 to the PC with a USB debugging mode. To activate, go to Settings–>Applications–>Development–>USB debugging.
4. Once the PdaNet is installed, turn ON the PdaNet on your Xperia X8, then right-click on the system tray icon for PdaNet on your PC and hit “Connect,” and you’ll be up and running.
Note: If you’re residing outside the US, like me, and still having trouble connecting to the internet though PdaNet says that it’s connected, just turn off the Google DNS in PdaNet settings. Right click on the PdaNet, hover to settings and untick Google DNS and reconnect.
That’s it! Your Xperia X8 will run as a modem for your PC or laptop. You can surf the Internet through your Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 without any problem. You can’t surf with a free version is https sites. If you’ll need to connect to https sites you’ll have to buy the app and support the developer.
Please, use the Xperia X8 as a modem wisely. Make sure to check your Data contract from your operator. It can cost you if you use more data than you are allowed.
