After few months using Android Donut 1.6, I upgraded my Android powered phone, the Sony Ericsson Xperia X8, from native Android Donut 1.6 into Android Eclair 2.1 .
Have a look on the difference between the Android Donut and Android Eclair.
It cost me about good few hours of the time to find everything I need to do the Android upgrade for Xperia X8. So I decide to do a little “How to” with easy steps to get the new Android Eclair 2.1 to your Xperia X8. I’ll try to explain it to you as easy as possible. Because we all are Xperia X8 owners and we want to get the Android 2.1 Eclair inside our X8.
Before we start: Disclaimer: I’m not responsible for any damage. You do it at on your own risk.
Step 1
Install the support application software to the PC or laptop.
You need an internet connection to download software as well as download the main update of Android Eclair 2.1. The support software which you need to download is the latest version of PC Companion for Xperia X8. You’ll find this application at Sony Ericsson website. It’s only 24.8 Mb exe file and it shouldn’t take too much time to get it even if you have slow internet connection. Download it and install to the the PC or laptop. After installation, run the PC Companion, connect the Xperia X8 into the PC via USB cable, and then click connect your phone at the Xperia X8 screen. PC Companion then would search for the software update automatically.
Step 2
Install backup and restore software and backup all data.
You should disconnect the Xperia X8 by click turn off usb on your PC and disconnect the USB cable.
Install backup and restore application from Sony Ericsson Website by scanning this code

…or type this address into your X8 web browser: m.sonyericsson.com/backup The app is small and it takes less then one minute to get it into your X8 phone.
Backup some important data like your contact, SMS messages, bookmarks, your system setting, etc. After backup process completed, you’re ready for next step.
Step 3
Upgrade Android Donut 1.6 to Android Eclair 2.1.
Connect the Xperia X8 phone using the USB cable again into the PC with pressing the back button while you put the USB cable into the Xperia X8 and continue the process of updating the Android in PC Companion application. The PC companion is easy to use, just follow all steps to the end. After update process, disconnect the USB cable from your Xperia X8 and then turn it on. After the phone run, check the version of Android in the system setting menu it should show: Android 2.1 Eclair. The feeling is great, like you have a new phone. Isn’t it? The phone is really like new, also no contacts, bookmarks, messages… Yes, you need to restore the backup from step number 2.
Step 4
Restoring the Backup into the Xperia X8.
You should find and tap the Backup and Restore icon on your Xperia X8 home screen. Tap Restore, than select your backup file, mark the data categories you wish to restore. Tap continue and Restore data. After you get message “Data restored”, tap last time the continue.
That’s it. You have new Android Eclair 2.1 installed in your Xperia X8 and all data like contacts restored. Congratulations.

What will be the cause if you did not install the backup and restore? what will happen?
It’s just backup tool from Sony Ericsson for Xperia X8. Anyway, you can always use another application for it.
You want be ably to do the backup with their tool (because you don’t install it). If you don’t need to do the backup for your Xperia X8 or if you’ll use another tool, everything should be fine.
How to receive apps from other device via bluetooth on my Xperia X8?
Go to the Android market and get an app called Bluetooth File Transfer. This app will allow you to send apps or any files but also to use your phone to browse external devices (eg phone) remotely once paired with it. You can use the Edit, copy & paste function to move the files over.
Can my all data be restored??? Are you sure that it will not cause damage to my phone?
Nobody can be sure, something can always went wrong. Don’t forget: You do it at on your own risk.
