A Step By Step Guide To Gaining Root Access On Sony Ericsson Xperia X8
It is an increasingly popular activity by many electronics owners to hack their electronic device and alter it from the way it was manufactured. This has been a popular practice for the Playstation Portable, the Nintendo Wii, the Xbox 360 and more. In modern times, this practice has extended to hacking, or “rooting,” a user’s mobile phone.
What exactly is rooting?
This is more of a common activity among phones that have applications or are newer and from the smartphone family. Rooting a phone is the main factor and difference between having a regular phone like everyone else in the world has and having one that allows the user to change certain otherwise unchangeable parts of the phone. This may include but may not be limited to changing icons or fonts.
Why do people root their mobile phones?
Home-brew applications are applications not generally found on the marketplace and normally consist of homemade programs that can be downloaded for free. Homebrew applications are possible to install when rooting a mobile phone. It is perhaps among the most popular reasons for wanting to root a mobile phone.
Some reasons for wanting to root a mobile phone may include, as previously mentioned, the ability to install homebrew applications as well as having the knowledge that the user is in full control of their phone.
What about the SE Xperia X8? Can that be rooted as well?
Yes, the Xperia X8 can be rooted. Keep in mind, however, it is highly recommended to carefully consider whether or not it is worth the risk to damaging the phone. If not done correctly, consequences may occur, such as damage to the phone.
How to Root the Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 Step By Step for Windows users:
- Download and install the Xperia X8 USB Drivers to your Windows PC
- Turn on USB debugging on your phone: Settings>Applications>Development>USB Debugging
- Download the latest SuperOneClick.zip file to your Windows computer. link Download the latest version. (I’m sorry, you’ll need to register)
- Extract the files from the .zip file into a new folder on your Windows PC.
- Restart both. The PC and X8 just in case.
- Plug your phone in to your PC and turn on USB debugging. DO NOT MOUNT THE SD CARD!!!
- Open the folder with the SuperOneClick contents and double click “SuperOneClick.exe”.
- Run the program, click root and wait few minutes. Done.
If it doesn’t work at the first time just re-run the program once or twice.

help me out please.
Hi Andy, It looks like there is problem with the SD card.
You can try to use another SD card, make sure it’s formated for your phone.
If you don’t have another SD card you can try this:
Run it again and when it stuck, Turn off the phone and leave it connected to the PC.
Close the superoneclick program. Open the program again and click Root. Then turn on the phone again. It should root your phone while the SD card is not connected. I never tried this before it’s just thoughts.
Let us know what option is working for you, good luck.
Is it possible to revert the rooting?
Thanks in advance
Hello i have a question how it can damage my phone
what happens?
Hi Alen,
Well, if you don’t know the answer, you shouldn’t even thing about rooting your Xperia X8. To be a Root means in Linux terminology to be a Administrator of the system. If you delete something it will be gone forever. And of course, if you delete something from the system that should be there, your phone will be bricked. It’s lots of ways how to brick your Xperia X8 and rooting the phone is one of them for people who don’t know to much about the system. Or like me, know just enough to be pretty dangerous to the Android
If you want to stay safe, don’t root your Xperia X8. If you want to learn more and sometimes pay bigger price (new phone), root the phone but be careful and try to reed as much as possible before you start to play with things you don’t know what it is for.
Very useful and easy to follow. Thanks!
Ok i’m trying to root mine, i followed everything up to clicking “Root” in the SuperOneClick. it says Killing ADB server then Starting ADB server then nothing follows. SuperOneClick is now not responding and it’s been 20mins. Should i start praying?
To guys with X8 android version 2.1 who’s having difficulty rooting. i suggest the superoneclick 2.1.
If ever I damage my phone, will the warranty of the item be affected?I saw your post that if xperia x8 is changed into android 2.2, and damaged, warranty won’t cover it. Is it the same with rooting the phone?
Yes, Jan. It’s the same. If you root the Xperia X8 you’ll be the Admin and you can easily damage your phone if you delete something what has to be there. The warranty won’t cover this.
After successful rooting what would be the next step u can suggest? Should I update my android version from 2.1 to higher? And can you please teach me how to free the memory of phone memory, I’ve heard there’s an application where I can install an app using the storage of the memory card (SD). Thanks!
Hi Chris,
One answer to both questions: I would suggest to install Link2SD. It’s cool app and it do exactly you need, free the RAM and use the SD card.
Thank you x8. I will do the “rooting project” later after i read all comments here. This is the best tutorial forum so far.
hi again i must say that i have sold the probleme by Updating the phone systeme the softewere using “Sony PC Companion 2.1″ whitch i uploadit from
http://www.sonymobile.com/global-en/support/
and it worked for me ^^ i hope that works for you thnx.
Works for me,thanks.
very good, works for me.
otimo, funcionou perfeito.
I had rooted my phone (Xperia X8) and it bricked, I sent it to Sony Ericcson and they repaired for me but now I want to root it again and the superoneclick seems to get jammed.
You should considered yourself as lucky because once you root the phone you are loosing the warranty.
Hi! I know this is an old post but-
Im just starting out with linux i thought i knew a fair amount about macs but now i realize ive only scratched the surface! Ive been interested in rooting my phone since i came across it but im scared! I like to think im a bit of a geek but dont know half the jaron, do you recommend i wait until ive got to know linux a bit better before i do it?
I had an xperia s and i was in love with it but it got stolen before i got insurance- wish id never took it out of the house! So back on x8 1.6 until i take it to be updated. Its sooo frustrating going this slow!!! Btw i agree this is the easiest to follow out of all the forums ive looked on. Cant wait to get to get my broadband on!
Thanks!
Hi Leigh,
If you want to root your X8 and you don’t have any plan B, just wait until you’ll find another way of your backup strategy. There is always a chance to brick the Xperia X8 and you need to make sure you won’t be without any phone.
It’s never the best time for rooting the phone. I’m Linux user over 10 years and I don’t feel confident with rooting any phone I need to use. If it’s phone just lying on the self I’m fine
Good luck.
Thanks…worked fine
how can i connect to ad hhoc wifi connections from my xperia x8 ?
Hi Anonymous, take a look at this WiFi tutorial for Xperia X8.
Hi x8,
I did not know much of rooting xperia x8, I just saw it in youtube and I rooted my phone, right now it is working fine, even i dont know how it works, now I want return back to my normal phone..
1. can I root my x8 using windows xp? is it safe?
2. can I repair if my phone damaged in root?
3. what about update to 2.3?
pls answer for all 3 questions.
Hi Thariq,
Yes you can root your X8 using the XP. Anyway, read the red warning again. There is so many things that can go wrong.
Yes, there is possibility to repair damaged phone. It’s just lots of hassle and you need to be sure that you want to spend the time or money with repairing.
You can even upgrade to the newest one – Android Jelly Bean (Android 4.1).
Don’t forget, you are risking to brick your Xperia X8 with upgrading or rooting the phone and you have to be sure to take the risk.
Hello X8, i have rooted the phone using SuperOneClick. Now, do i always have to keep the option “Usb Debugging” in selected more or can i turn off now?
And one more, i install apps from market which obviously installs the app to phone memory, and move those apps to free up the phone memory, and it goes on like that if i wanted to install more apps? Does that work this way? or Can i able to install apps directly to sd card now?
That’s excellent,
You can turn off the USB Debugging. The answer to your next question is: Yes, you’ll have to install each app to the phone memory and after that you move it using apps2SD. You won’t be able to intall it directly to the SD card. The operation takes only few seconds anyway.
thanks i do it
